Why does therapy work? This is a valid question - when you decide to call our office to schedule an appointment, you have decided that help is needed for you to improve your life, whether it be treating a mental health disorder such as depression or anxiety or addressing your desire to meet life goals that you have been beyond your reach.

As a therapist and life coach, I have seen the transformative power of psychotherapy in helping people overcome mental health problems, conquer adversity, become more resilient, and find satisfaction and happiness.

How does psychotherapy help you overcome mental health problems?

therapy helps you remove or reduce the symptoms of problems like anxiety and depression, bringS ABOUT HEALING AND GROWTH, AND HELPS you meet life goals. A unique curative factor of psychotherapy is that it provides a safe and confidential environment for you to talk about your thoughts, emotions, and experiences without fear of judgment or criticism. If you have a good fit, a bond of trust develops between you and your therapist. The connection you have with your therapist allows for deeper self-exploration and self-reflection. Your therapist will provide validation, understanding of your struggles, and support by creating a compassionate and nonjudgmental environment.

When I work with you, I am providing what is called “insight-oriented” therapy. Here, you work on self-awareness. You learn to recognize what you think, what you feel, and how you behave. You can’t fix the problem if you don’t know what it is and what may be causing it. You will learn to identify what thoughts lead to your emotions and how your emotions drive your behaviors.

Do you have underlying patterns, and why are you motivated to contribute to the problem? Is what you are thinking, feeling, and doing work for you? Unlikely, because if it did, you would not be in my office. Having insight into what you struggle with and why gives you the insight needed to learn how to change. You will begin to choose your behaviors, not just react to the environment. This is life-changing.

In therapy, you will learn new coping skills and a new way to address life’s challenges. If you are struggling with a mood disorder such as depression or anxiety or are unable to regulate your emotions due to life traumas, you will learn self-regulation skills, ways to manage stress, and how to be more resilient when life challenges arise. Applying new coping strategies increases your sense of self-worth and confidence.

But therapy doesn’t just focus on your day-to-day life. In therapy, you will reflect and work on the causes of your fear, pain, and other negative feelings. You will identify the roots of your psychological struggles by working on underlying traumas, faulty beliefs, and unresolved relational conflicts.

When we uncover the reasons why you are feeling troubled, we can work on healing your psychological “wounds” and resolve trauma that may date back to childhood. Doing this work brings greater understanding and allows you to reprocess emotions that may have gotten “stuck” inside of you in childhood. This allows you to find compassion for yourself and release the pain you may have experienced through past trauma.

But therapy also allows you to discover your strengths and fosters personal growth. By talking about your struggles, you work with your therapist on how to grow as a person. This often brings a sense of healing and life purpose. You discover who you really are. Underneath negative beliefs you may have been taught about yourself, you will identify who you really are.

When you know who you are and realize that you are valuable and lovable just as you are, you are free to work toward greater happiness and contentment. In life coaching, you will work on identifying your goals - what it is you want for yourself but are struggling to achieve.

Successful therapy will allow you to improve your relationships. You will learn to identify problematic communication styles and correct them. You will learn what it means to care about and be empathic toward others. This allows you to resolve interpersonal conflicts and become more emotionally intimate with partners and friends. You will learn how to set healthy boundaries, including the protective and external boundaries. Having boundaries brings greater happiness in your relationships.
